Teaching Philosophy

Inclusion, Community, Empowerment

Music is a space for growth, learning, and self expression.

I believe that there is no form of art quite like it, and in my classroom I strive to create a place where all students can enter excited for what's to come, and leave feeling fulfilled.

I am still a learner myself, and I hope my students and I can work together to teach each other new ideas.

Inclusion is a core value of mine. I never want my classroom to have a label for who can come in and out of it. Everyone should have the ability and freedom to participate in music. My classroom is a place where all students regardless of prior experience or ability level can learn and work together.

Community building is an essential part of our class time. We spend units working towards creative projects and group work. As well as performing as a class in multiple settings. Without community, music and the love for it can suffer. I utilize SEL and pedagogy relating to the wellbeing of my students.

Empowerment, where a student can come into my classroom and now that their personality, unique abilities, and ideas will be heard. No student should leave feeling like they were talked at for an hour. My classroom is a space for creativity and student focused activities. I want students to feel like they can achieve what they put there mind to in this class. We strive to eliminate barriers and create a unique space for fostering new ideas, while still following a curriculum, which you can read an overview of below.
