Classroom Climate
A positive classroom climate is of utmost importance in musical spaces. Traditionally, western, male-written music dominates the music classroom. Students are free to bring in class songs and ideas from home about what they want to sing. Utilizing things like popular music pedagogy and class discussions, students guide the class and what we learn.
Our program utilizes time to get to know one another, whether that be learning about cultures or abilities, or sharing what we've done that day in school, time to learn with and about one another creates a space in which students can feel free to express themselves.
Providing Support

Emotional Supports
Students who need extra emotional support are invited to communicate difficulties in person or via our class check-in at the beginning of every day. The classroom is an open space to build emotional regulation skills and to express feelings.
Social Supports
Music is a social subject, and in our classroom students can be supported in many ways socially. Concerts and repertoire selection are based around decisions made by the students, so everyone's voice can be heard in and out of the classroom.
Behavioral Supports
Using the tiered approach from PBIS, behavioral supports for provided as needed. Interfering behaviors are recorded for research purposes, allowing for a deeper understanding of potential triggers and therefore a plan to proceed.
